Texas Tournament Series

Galveston Rules


The following rules will remain in effect throughout the entire tournament. Interpretation and enforcement of these rules shall be exclusively left to the Tournament Officials. All decisions of Tournament Officials are final.

1. All anglers must have a valid Texas fishing license and saltwater stamp and must observe Texas Parks and Wildlife rules and regulations. All participating boats must comply with all state and federal registration, applicable fishing permit requirements and all safety rules or regulations.

2. All fish must be caught by rod and reel. Minimum line test is 30 lb test.

3. There will be the following tournament trophies:

First Place Captain in each Division (Pro & Am.)- Most Tarpon Tagged.

Second Place Captain in each Division (Pro & Am.)- Most Tarpon Tagged.

Individual team members will also receive trophies in each division for first and second place.

4. Tournament teams will be composed of a maximum of four (4) anglers on board, with the exception that there may be up to four adult and as many youth anglers as you wish. All teams are expected to follow high standards of sportsmanship, safety, courtesy and conservation.

5. The tournament reserves the right to refuse any entry with or without cause in its sole discretion. Any applicant refused entry prior to the tournament will be entitled to a full refund of paid entry fees.

6. Tournament Officials are not responsible for mailed entries that are not delivered by the postal service. You may send a self-addressed, stamped postcard with your entry which will be returned as verification that your entry was received or you may e-mail projecttarpon@hotmail.com to confirm receipt of your entry.

7. In the event thunderstorm warnings or dangerous weather conditions exist prior to the start of the tournament, the day’s fishing may be delayed or postponed. Tournament Officials will be at tournament headquarters and can be reached at 713-819-1840 in the event of postponement.

8. If inclement weather conditions occur at any time during the tournament it is the entrant’s responsibility to seek safety until safe conditions prevail. If the Tournament Officials declare a rain-out, it will be rescheduled to August 9, 2015, if possible.

9. In the event of an injury or accident, the following list offers telephone numbers and VHF channels monitored by local emergency personnel: VHF Channel 16; Local EMS: 911.

10. All participants are responsible for the operation, maintenance and safety of their vessels, themselves and their fellow team members. All participants are expected to use their own best judgment. No action by the Tournament should be construed as an endorsement or representation concerning whether it is safe to leave port or continue fishing at any given time. The Tournament will not give advice or recommendations to teams concerning weather conditions.

12. All participants must sign the entry form, which includes a waiver, release and indemnity agreement concerning liability. If any team fails to have each member of its team sign this form, it may lead to disqualification and a refusal to award prizes to that team and/or the angler. 

13. All participants are expected to operate their boats in a sportsmanlike manner and in conformity with general tarpon fishing techniques, so as to minimize the disruption to fish. Outboard motorboats are requested to have a form of propulsion (i.e. electric motor etc.) that will allow for quiet operation and use of such alternative propulsion system is STRONGLY requested. An infraction of this rule and the spooking of fish will be handled on a case by case basis. If it is determined that such conduct was intentional or reckless, it may result in disqualification during the tournament.

Specific Tournament Rules

The following rules will remain in effect throughout the entire tournament. Interpretation and enforcement of these rules shall be left exclusively to the Tournament Officials. All decisions of Tournament Officials are final.

1.      All anglers General Tournament Rules apply unless they specifically conflict with these rules. 

2.      There are two specific tarpon trophy divisions:  Professional Gide Division and Amateur Division.

3.      A boat is ineligible to compete as an amateur team if any of its team members is a professional fishing guide or a person who has accepted wages, compensation or pay for hire for the purposes of taking other individual(s) fishing at any time during the past five years.  Whether a team is permitted to participate in an amateur division is left to the sole discretion of the Tarpon Tomorrow Texas Tournament Series.

4.   All Pro/Guide Division Boats must be captained at all time by the professional guide on board.

5.      Registration:  GALVESTON YACHT BASIN - VIEWING DECK on Friday, August 7, 2015. Registration/check-in will take place between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Captains Meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. on the Viewing Deck at the Galveston Yacht Basin.
If the participants wish to have a CALCUTTA, it will be conducted immediately after the Captains Meeting.

If you cannot attend Friday night, there will be a late registration/check-in between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. on Saturday morning on the View Deck at the Galveston Yacht Basin.

6.   Participants Rule:  All participants must sign an entry form in advance and it MUST be handed in at registration and/or PRIOR TO FISHING.  So, download it and have them sign it before the tournament if they can't be at registration.

7.  Launch Restrictions: Boats may launch from any boat ramp located on the coast between the southern bank of the Brazos River and the Texas/Louisiana border.

8.      Fishing Time:  6:00 a.m. (leave dock) and fishing is non-stop until 5:00 p.m. (lines-out of water).

9.      Geographical Restrictions:  All fish must be wild and hooked and landed in Texas State Coastal Waters, Bays, Rivers and Estuaries which are linked to the Gulf of Mexico, without being cut-off from the Gulf by man made barriers (i.e. dams, spillways, etc.) or natural barriers, and are within the geographical bondaries described as follows: An area bounded to the north by the Texas/Louisiana border and to the south by the tip of the southern jetty at the Colorado River and out at a right angles to the coast ten miles. If you have any concerns, ask first !!

10. TACKLE REQUIREMENTS: (a)  Minimum line breaking strength – 30 lbs.  (b)  All fish must be wild and caught in Texas territorial waters.  (c)  All fish must be caught by rod and reel.  (d)  All fish caught using live or dead bait must be caught using circle hooks.  J-hooks and treble hooks may be used with lures (which are not tipped with live or dead bait).  (e)  No leader may exceed 300 lbs and no leader may exceed 10 feet in length. 

11.  Proof of Catch Deadline:  Must be turned in, between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on tournament day at the View Deck at the Galveston Yacht Basin. TROPHY PRESENTATION AT 6:15 p.m. on the View Deck.

12.  There is no requirement that boats must return on the water. You may launch, trailer and relaunch if necessary during the tournament.  You also ARE NOT REQUIRED to return on the water from fishing. 

13.  You MUST have a WORKING VHF radio. When a fish is hooked you must attempt to notify tournament officials on VHF 72 . If no response, then you must attempt to call the tournament via cell phone (713) 819-1840. If there is no answer, you MUST leave a message.After the fish is landed/released, you MUST contact the tournament as soon as practicable thereafter using the same methods.

14.   Prizes:  First and Second Place Captain Trophies based on the most tarpon tagged and released with proof of catch (e.g. pro/guide division and amateur division).  Individual Team Member Trophies for the first place and second place team members in each division will also be given.


When a team tags and releases a fish, the Captain MUST attempt to contact tournament officials via phone or text at number 713-819-1840. If you call and there is no answer, you MUST leave a message.

You MUST take a photo of the fish, the tag IN THE FISH and the identifying marker which will be handed out at registration - NO EXCEPTIONS or the fish won't count. YOU MUST CONTACT TOURNAMENT OFFICIALS BY PHONE CALL OR TEXT FOR A FISH TO COUNT IF THERE IS A TIE BREAKER. The first fish released based on time of release via phone call or text will determine a tie. SCALE SAMPLING IS NOT REQUIRED BUT REQUESTED SEE 17 BELOW.

16. Any fishing technique intended or implemented in such a way as to snag or floss a tarpon is strictly forbidden.  It is left to the discretion of the Tournament Committee whether a particular technique is a snagging or flossing technique.

17.   Scale Sampling Kit:  Please scale sample as many tarpon as possilbe. Kits will be provided. 

18.   ENTRY FEES:    $200.00 per team boat if mailed by July 1, 2015 - $250 therafter. If you wish to get four tournament t-shirts and buy additional shirts, you must get your entry fee in no later than July 1, 2015. We MAY NOT HAVE EXTRA SHIRTS FOR SALE.

19.   These rules may be subject to change at the sole discretion of the Tournament Officials at any time prior to fishing beginning on the first day of the tournament.
